It originally had nothing to do with artificial intelligence. The British Overseas Territory has the country code AI, just as Germany has DE. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/db\/ai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IANA entry<\/a>, the Government of Anguilla is responsible for the ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anguilla has handed the technical operation to the US company Identity Digital. The contract runs for five years and was <a href=\"https:\/\/domainnamewire.com\/2024\/10\/15\/identity-digital-inks-ai-domain-deal-with-anguilla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced in October 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone can register one. You do not need a residence or a company on Anguilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"kosten\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does an .ai domain cost and where do you buy it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Considerably more than .de or .com. Since 5 March 2026, registrars pay the registry $80 per year instead of $70. And .ai is always registered and renewed for at least two years. At Porkbun you therefore pay $165.40 up front. It has been on that list since May 2023, next to .io and .co. So your website is not targeted at Anguilla. <a href=\"#\" id=\"hypotext-anchor-bz-gcctld\" class=\"hypotext closed\" rel=\"hypotext-content-bz-gcctld\">Which other country code endings count as generic<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"hypotext-content hypotext-content-bz-gcctld\" rel=\"hypotext-anchor-bz-gcctld\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"hypotext closed close\" rel=\"hypotext-content-bz-gcctld\"><\/a>Google treats 20 country code endings like generic endings, including .co, .io, .me, .tv and .fm (<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/specialty\/international\/managing-multi-regional-sites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source: Google Search Central<\/a>). Some country code endings became brands because they spell a word or allow a domain hack. Naval Ravikant uses nav.al, the ending of Albania. Notion started on notion.so, the ending of Somalia, and has since moved to notion.com (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.createwith.com\/tool\/notion\/updates\/notion-moves-to-notioncom-after-years-long-domain-acquisition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source: Createwith<\/a>). The difference to .ai: .al and .so are not on Google&#8217;s list. Such domains still send a country signal.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no bonus either. Back in 2015, Google <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/blog\/2015\/07\/googles-handling-of-new-top-level\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made clear<\/a> that keywords in the ending neither help nor hurt. An .ai domain does not make you rank better for AI searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An .ai domain does not make you rank better for AI searches.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a national market this means: a country domain such as .de sends a country signal, .ai sends none. According to Google, that is usually a weak signal. Yellow: 2026, not yet complete.<\/p><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first .ai domains in the dataset date from 2014, for example wit.ai. From 2022 to 2025 the share rose steeply, from 13 to 32%. For 2026 it stands at 27%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five observations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mostly B2B.<\/strong> 655 of the 900 startups on .ai are B2B companies. That is 73%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shorter names.<\/strong> The median is 7 characters, on .com it is 9. 38% of .ai names have 6 characters or fewer, on .com only 18%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The ending as part of the name.<\/strong> For 18%, the .ai is part of the company name: Jasper.ai, People.ai, Observe.AI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Names ending in AI mostly take .ai.<\/strong> Of 277 companies whose name ends in AI, 69% are on .ai and 28% on .com.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>.ai is still missing at the top.<\/strong> Of Y Combinator&#8217;s 90 top companies, only one uses .ai: Caper. Scale AI is on scale.com. Most top companies, however, were founded before .ai was common among startups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This suggests the ending solves a practical problem: the short name you want is often taken on .com and still free on .ai. Whether these companies later move to .com, only the coming years will show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wann-lohnt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">When .ai is worth it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Your situation<\/th><th>Recommendation<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>AI is the core of your product, your market is international<\/td><td>.ai fits. Secure the .com as soon as it is affordable.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Your short preferred name is taken on .com<\/td><td>Only if AI fits your offer. Otherwise look for a different name.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>AI is only one feature of your product<\/td><td>Skip it. The ending ties you to one topic.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Local business or service provider in one country<\/td><td>Take your country ending, e.g. .de.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>You yourself are the brand<\/td><td>Your name on .com or your country ending.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More on choosing a domain ending is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bernard.digital\/en\/domain-handbook\/\">Domain Handbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group bz-callout-dark has-text-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-e8f27b5c wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-radius:15px;color:#f4f2ef;background-color:#161514;padding-top:32px;padding-right:36px;padding-bottom:28px;padding-left:36px\">\n<p class=\"bz-callout-eyebrow wp-block-paragraph\">From my practice: kywrd.ai<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For my tool <a href=\"https:\/\/kywrd.ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kywrd.ai<\/a> I chose .ai because AI clearly makes up a large part of the product. I struggled with the decision and considered going with .io again, as with my other digital projects. Because the processes run agentically, .ai simply fits well. And .ai even adds value to the product, because the ending is extremely popular right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The .com would probably have been available too, but it carries nothing. The .ai gives more context. I bought it in January 2026 at Vercel for $140, and kywrd.io for $30 along with it. I would do it exactly the same way again. <a href=\"#\" id=\"hypotext-anchor-bz-kywrd\" class=\"hypotext closed\" rel=\"hypotext-content-bz-kywrd\">What still bothers me about the name<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"hypotext-content hypotext-content-bz-kywrd\" rel=\"hypotext-anchor-bz-kywrd\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"hypotext closed close\" rel=\"hypotext-content-bz-kywrd\"><\/a>I am not entirely happy that kywrd is a domain hack that drops the vowels. That tends to signal indie hacker projects. At the same time, kywrd is exactly that, so it is fine for now. A variant with an o in the name felt inconsistent to me. I am happy with it and think the name lands well with SEOs and digitally savvy web admins, because it fits.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My rule of thumb:<\/strong> .ai only if it really is an AI product. Otherwise you can save yourself the ending.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The .com would probably have been available too, but it carries nothing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"risiken\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The price can keep rising.<\/strong> The increase in March 2026 was a little over 14%. How much further it rises is decided by Anguilla and its operator alone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It remains a country code ending.<\/strong> The Government of Anguilla sets the rules. How delicate that can get is shown by .io: since the UK announced it would hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, the future of the ending has been debated. The treaty from May 2025 is still not in force. ICANN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icann.org\/en\/blogs\/details\/the-chagos-archipelago-and-the-io-domain-14-11-2024-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated back in November 2024<\/a> that the end of .io is not a foregone conclusion, and that if it came, there would be a five-year transition period that can be extended.
