Search engine market share 2026

By 28. October 2026No Comments

Google or ChatGPT: where do people really search in 2026? Depending on the study, AI has already taken over search or barely matters. Neither is quite true.

Here you find the current search engine market shares in Germany and worldwide, how usage splits across AI assistants, and why the studies are so far apart.

Key takeaways

  • Google: 87.8% of all searches in Germany, and 96.2% on smartphones (Statcounter, September 2026).
  • Bing: 6.5% overall, but 19.4% on desktop.
  • AI search: 1.7% of all desktop activity in Europe, almost double the figure a year earlier (Datos).
  • AI assistants: ChatGPT clearly leads but is losing share to Gemini and Claude.
  • AI inside Google: More than 2 billion people see AI Overviews every month.
  • Measurement: Referrals, clickstreams and extrapolations produce different numbers. Without the method, none of them means much.
  • Conclusion: Google remains the largest search market. AI is added as a second layer.

How is the search engine market split in 2026?

Google remains number one by a wide margin. According to Statcounter, Google accounted for 87.8% of all searches in Germany in September 2026, and worldwide for 89.9%. Statcounter counts visits to websites running its tracking and attributes them to the search engine the visitors came from.

Smartphone and desktop

On smartphones Google is almost alone: 96.2%. On desktop things look different. There, Google reaches 70.0% and Bing 19.4%.

Tip: if you sell to businesses, Bing Webmaster Tools are worth a look. On desktop in Germany, almost one in five searches runs through Bing.

How big is AI search compared to Google?

Measured by usage, AI search is still small but growing fast. Datos and SparkToro analyze the clickstreams of a desktop panel. In Europe and the UK, AI tools made up 1.7% of all desktop activity in Q1 2026, up from 1.0% a year earlier. In the same period, Google accounted for around 95% of search engine usage (Datos/SparkToro via PPC Land).

By query volume, the gap is about one to eight. Ahrefs estimates that ChatGPT handles around 1.6 billion search-like queries per day, Google 13.7 billion. That is about 12% of Google’s volume. For traffic to websites, the gap is wider: Google sends around 190 times as many visits as ChatGPT.

// Search-like queries per day (Ahrefs)
Google ████████████████████████ 13.7 bnChatGPT ███ 1.6 bn

An analysis by OneLittleWeb paints a similar picture. In June 2026 it counted 162 billion visits to search engines and 8.3 billion to AI chatbots, a ratio of almost 20 to 1 (Android Headlines).

Why some studies show much higher numbers

Graphite includes in-app usage and arrives at a different result: worldwide, AI equals 56% of search engine volume, and 28% for pure informational queries. According to the study, 83% of AI usage happens in apps that desktop panels do not capture (Search Engine Land). The method is disputed, though.

Rand Fishkin of SparkToro publicly criticized the study, among other things for combining estimates from web and app data. Graphite then published further details on its method.

How big AI search is depends on how you measure it.

On desktop, AI search is a fraction of Google; in apps, it is considerably larger. Both numbers can be right, they just measure different things.

In short: for websites, what counts most is where visits and mentions come from. There, Google is far ahead in 2026.

Which AI assistants do people use?

ChatGPT is the clear market leader but is losing share. In Europe, according to Datos, ChatGPT accounted for 45% of desktop usage of AI tools in March 2026, Gemini for 19% and Claude for 10%. Perplexity and Copilot each stayed below 5% (Datos/SparkToro).

// AI assistants, EU/UK, March 2026
ChatGPT ██████████████████████ 45 %Gemini █████████ 19 %Claude █████ 10 %Perplexity, Copilot each under 5 %

The trend points towards Google. Growth Memo puts ChatGPT’s share among AI chatbots at 56% for July 2026, down from 78% a year earlier. Over the same period, Gemini grew from 15 to 30% and Claude from 2 to 10%.

// Shares among AI chatbots (Growth Memo)
            Jul 2025 Jul 2026ChatGPT 78 % ▶ 56 %Gemini 15 % ▶ 30 %Claude 2 % ▶ 10 %

Where website visits come from

Statcounter counts visits that AI assistants send to websites, i.e. referrals rather than usage. In Germany in September 2026, 79.3% of these referrals came from ChatGPT, 11.1% from Gemini and 5.2% from Perplexity.

// Referrals from AI assistants, DE, Sep 2026
ChatGPT ████████████████████████ 79.3 %Gemini ███ 11.1 %Perplexity ██ 5.2 %Copilot █ 3.1 %Claude ▏ 1.4 %Statcounter, visits to websites

Watch out: usage and referrals are not the same thing. ChatGPT has a larger share of referrals than of usage; for Gemini it is the other way round. The numbers come from different sources and regions, but the direction is clear.

How much AI is inside Google itself?

The largest AI search happens inside Google itself. By mid-2025, more than 2 billion people a month were already using AI Overviews (TechCrunch). For AI Mode, Google has cited around 1 billion monthly users since I/O 2026 (Growth Memo).

// AI in Google Search
AI OVERVIEWS summary above the results appears automaticallyAI MODE separate tab, chat-style answer chosen actively

For websites, this affects clicks. According to Pew Research, users clicked a regular result in 8% of searches with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one.

// Clicks on regular results (Pew, 2025)
no AI Overview ███████████████ 15 %with AI Overview ████████ 8 %

In short: anyone talking about AI visibility in Germany in 2026 mainly means Google. AI Overviews reach more people than any standalone assistant.

Why do the studies contradict each other?

Every study measures something different. If you know the method, you can put the numbers in context.

SourceWhat is measured
StatcounterVisits to websites with Statcounter tracking, by origin. Shows referrals only, no usage without a click.
Datos/SparkToroClickstreams of a desktop panel. Smartphones and apps are missing.
AhrefsExtrapolation from figures published by Google and OpenAI. Mixes time periods and classifies queries itself.
GraphiteWeb and app usage, estimated. The method is disputed.
OneLittleWebEstimated traffic of 10,171 websites. Browser visits only.

My recommendation: never compare numbers from different studies directly. What is meaningful is the trend within the same source.

What does this mean for your marketing?

The numbers do not argue for switching from Google to AI, but for doing both.

AI search does not replace Google. It comes on top.

  1. SEO remains the foundation: Google holds almost 88% market share in Germany, and AI systems often draw on pages that rank well. More in GEO vs. SEO.
  2. AI Overviews first: They reach the most people without anyone having to open a new app.
  3. Measure assistants separately: According to Growth Memo, 91% of cited sources appear on only one of three platforms: ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews. How to do it is covered in Measuring AI visibility.
  4. Don’t forget Bing in B2B: On desktop in Germany, almost one in five searches runs through Bing.

From my practice: every platform is a market of its own

At Placetel we track 75 prompts daily. The brand appears in 60% of AI Overviews, in 53% of ChatGPT answers and in 30% of Perplexity answers. Same brand, same questions, three different values.
