Example

The proposal was published by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) in September 2024. The idea resembles robots.txt: a fixed address where machines can quickly find what matters on a website without reading every page.

In practice

As of today, no major AI provider has confirmed that it reads llms.txt. It costs little and does no harm, but it doesn’t replace a well-structured, crawlable website. Create it if it takes ten minutes, and invest the real time in content.

How it fits together

Whether your content reaches an AI is decided first by AI crawlers. The llms.txt is an extra signal for them. What counts after that is whether your pages are usable as a source in RAG .
