GEO Glossary
Prompt
A prompt is the question or instruction someone gives an AI assistant. In GEO it plays the role the keyword plays in SEO.
At a glance
SEO: KEYWORD seo beratung berlin │GEO: PROMPT Which SEO consultancy in Berlin helps a B2B SaaS with a small team and no ad budget?
Example
A prompt often contains role, goal and context. That’s why a founder gets a different answer than a head of marketing, even though both mean the same topic.
// prompt set by personaFounder "Which domain extension for my AI startup?"Marketing "How do we get recommended in ChatGPT?"Agency "Which SEO partner helps with AI visibility?"
Why it matters for GEO
Prompts are longer than search terms and contain context. So if you measure GEO, you need a prompt set that reflects your audience’s real questions, not just keywords.
In practice
Good sources for prompts are People Also Ask, long queries in Search Console and questions from customer conversations. Assign each prompt to a persona and a goal.
How it fits together
Via Query Fan-Out the AI turns one prompt into several searches, retrieves the results via RAG and bases its answer on them via Grounding . In the end it decides whether your brand shows up as a Mention or as a Citation or not.
