GEO vs. SEO: what changes and what stays

By 28. October 2026No Comments

Is SEO dead, and does everything have to be called GEO now? This question comes up in almost every discussion about search right now. The short answer: SEO remains the foundation, GEO is a new layer on top. The longer answer shows where the two are alike and where they diverge.

Here you get the direct comparison in a table, what they have in common, the differences in goal and measurement, and an assessment of how to split your budget.

Key takeaways

  • In short: SEO optimizes for rankings and clicks in the results list. GEO optimizes for mentions and citations in AI answers.
  • Stays the same: Crawlability, indexing, helpful content and trust. Without this foundation, there is no AI visibility.
  • Changes: Measurement (share instead of position), the role of third-party sources and the goal (mention instead of click).
  • Google says: Optimizing for AI search is “still SEO”.
  • Data: Good Google rankings correlate most strongly with mentions in AI answers (Seer Interactive).
  • My stance: GEO is the promise, SEO is the proof.

What stays the same in GEO and SEO?

More than many GEO offerings suggest. Google writes in its guide to AI features, that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI features in Search. Optimizing for generative AI search is therefore “still SEO”.

  • Crawlability: What search engines and AI crawlers cannot retrieve cannot be cited.
  • Helpful content: Google asks for content written for people first. That applies to the list of links just as much as to the answer.
  • Trust: Author, evidence, experience. AI systems prefer sources they can trust.
  • Search intent: If you miss the question behind the search, you will be neither ranked nor cited.

The data confirms this. Seer Interactive had GPT-4o answer 10,000 questions. Mentions correlated most strongly with Google rankings on page 1, with a correlation of around 0.65.

In short: if you rank well in Google, you have the best chance of being named in AI answers too. GEO without SEO is a house without a foundation.

What changes with GEO?

From click to mention

In classic search, the click is what counts. In AI search, users often get their answer directly. Ahrefs measured across 300,000 keywords that the click-through rate for position 1 drops by 34.5% when an AI Overview appears. The mention in the answer becomes the actual contact with the brand.

// CTR for position 1 (Ahrefs, index)
no AI Overview ████████████████████ 100with AI Overview █████████████ 65.534.5% fewer clicks

From position to share

A ranking is stable for weeks. AI answers are not: in a test by SparkToro and Gumshoe, the chance of getting the same list of brands twice was below 1 in 100. That is why a share across many queries is measured, such as the mention rate or share of voice.

// Same question, five days (example)
          Google AI answerDay 1 Rank 3 ■ namedDay 2 Rank 3 □ missingDay 3 Rank 3 ■ namedDay 4 Rank 4 ■ namedDay 5 Rank 3 □ missing─────────────────────────────────Result Position 3 Share 60 %

From backlinks to mentions

What others write about you shapes the answer more strongly than in classic SEO. Ahrefs showed for 75,000 brands that web mentions correlate much more closely with mentions in AI Overviews (0.664) than backlinks do (0.218). Best-of lists, forums and reviews thus become levers.

// Correlation with mentions in AIO
Web mentions █████████████ 0.664Backlinks ████ 0.218Correlation, Ahrefs, 75,000 brands

From pages to brands

AI systems think in entities. They assess what is known about your brand as a whole, not just a single page. Consistent information on name, service and location becomes more important.

// What AI builds a brand’s image from
┌─ own websiteBRAND ───┼─ reviews ├─ best-of lists ├─ forums and communities └─ press and directoriesone entity, many sources

The mention is the new click.

Does SEO still make sense?

Yes, more than before. SEO is the precondition for AI systems finding your pages at all. If you cut your SEO budget now to put it into “GEO hacks”, you are sawing off the branch your AI visibility sits on.

Google explicitly warns in its guide: effective SEO strategies come before “AEO/GEO hacks”. Google Search does not need special files like llms.txt, dedicated schema for AI or chopping texts into pieces.

From my practice: promise and proof

I see search, content and reputation as the three pillars of my work. GEO is the layer on top.

That is why I position myself like this: GEO is the promise, SEO is the proof. If you want to be visible in AI answers today, you first need a brand that gets found in search.

How should you split your budget?

There is no fixed formula. This order makes sense:

  1. Measure: How often are you named in AI answers today, compared with your competitors? It costs little and decides everything else.
  2. Close SEO gaps: Technical, content, rankings. This works twice, in Google and in AI answers.
  3. Build reputation: Mentions in the sources AI cites in your market.
  4. Re-measure regularly: Monthly, with the same prompt set.

Tip: if you only have budget for one, invest in good SEO and measure your AI visibility alongside it. That way you see whether the SEO work also shows up in the answers.

FAQ

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO optimizes for rankings and clicks in search engine results lists. GEO optimizes for being named and cited in AI-generated answers. GEO builds on SEO.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google itself calls optimizing for AI search “still SEO”. Without findability in search, there is hardly any AI visibility.

What does GEO instead of SEO mean?

The phrase usually refers to the shift from classic search engine optimization to optimizing for AI answers. In practice it is not an instead, but an in addition.

Do I need a dedicated GEO agency?

Not necessarily. What matters is that someone thinks about SEO and GEO together, because the measures interlock. Separate providers for each often lead to duplicate work.

What is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization and essentially means the same as GEO. An overview of the terms is in What is GEO?.

Next in the handbook: Prefer to take it all away as a picture? The next chapter sums up the three most important differences in three graphics: GEO at a glance.
